Japan Display forays into OLED, snags supply deal for Apple Watch

The supply order for OLED screen for the Apple Watch marks Japan Display’s forray into the OLED market.

In a development that comes as a breakthrough for cash-strapped Japan Display Inc, the company is set to commence the supply of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens for the Apple Watch later this year, said two sources.

Japan Display’s late shift to OLED has cost it orders from Apple.

According to two sources familiar with the matter at hand, the supply deal marks Japan Display’s foray into the OLED display market.

Sources preferred the cover of anonymity since they are not authorized to speak to the media.

The company’s mainstay liquid crystal display (LCD) business saw a slump in business following Apple Inc’s moving away from LCD following disappointing sales of the iPhone XR – Apple’s only LCD model in its 2018 line-up.

The OLED display market is dominated by Samsung Electronics unit Samsung Display and LG Display. The newer, OLED technology are generally thinner and allow more flexibility than LCD screens.
