Despite the thousands of autopsies, despite our vast knowledge of the organs of the human body, researchers came to discover the new organ only in 2017. The discovery could potentially lead to better understanding and diagnosis of ailments arising out of our digestive system.
Although doctors and surgeons have carved open the human body and have studied it in minute detail, they seemed to have missed out an organ.
Much to everyone’s surprise, scientists have now discovered a new organ in the human body – the mesentery.
The mesentery links the intestine to the abdomen. Earlier, the mesentery had been grouped under our digestive system. This discovery now places it as a distinct structure within our digestive system.
The discovery has upturned decades of medical knowledge.
In 2012, researchers first discovered the continuous nature of the mesentery through microscopic observation. Since then detailed examination have proven that the mesentery has enough functions to be termed as a separate organ.
However, it is, supposedly, too early to understand what the function of the mesentery is. However, the very act of classifying it as a separate organ has had a profound impact on medical science since it meant that the textbook of Gray’s Anatomy had to be revised and had to accommodate the new finding.
Of vital importance is the fact that it has opened a new line of enquiry.Calvin, one of the researchers who was part of the discovery team said, it’s a “whole new area of science”.
Now, if only scientists can get a grip on how the mesentery interacts with the digestive system, there could potentially be better forms of treatments of specific conditions and diseases for the gut.
