In a statement Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng said, Toronto has reiterated to Washington that it plans on going ahead with a digital services tax; the potential move is likely to impact U.S. tech giants including Facebook and Alphabet Inc’s Google.
Ng made the remarks in bilateral talks with U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, who has expressed concerns about the plan.
In November 2020, Canada had let it be known that it intends on imposing a tax on corporations providing digital services from 2022.
The digital service tax will remain in place until all major nations come up with a coordinated approach on taxing tech giants.
