United States based electric car maker Tesla is enhancing price for the cars that comes with the “self-driving” option throughout the world. The company said that the price will be hiked by $1,000 for a start.
The price “will continue to rise” as its technology improves, tweeted the company’s founder and CEO Elon Musk.
But the technology it’s adding will be worth more than $100,000, the entrepreneur also tweeted.
In recent week, Musk has been in a tussle with government officials in California over the restarting of work at the company US car assembly factory there.
Although the technology is not yet fully autonomous, the “full self-driving” (FSD) option in Tesla’s electric cars is called Autopilot. This option in the cars comes with a number of features which includes automatic lane changes, parallel parking and a summon feature that enable a car to be parked automatically and automatic retrieval of the car. The company is set to add on a number of other features on its cars with autonomous options including automatic traffic light and stop sign control.
The cars that have self-driving options will cost $8,000 more when the hike in price will is implemented starting July 1.
“The FSD price will continue to rise as the software gets closer to full self-driving capability with regulatory approval,” Musk said in a series of tweets on Monday. “[At] that point, the value of FSD is probably somewhere in excess of $100,000.”
An investigation against Tesla was initiated by regulators in the US following the death of a driver in 2018 while using Autopilot. The results of the investigations showed that the driver was busy playing a video game on his smartphone when the crash had taken place.
Musk often takes to tweeter to talk about different issues, some of which has landed him trouble. Earlier this month, Musk had tweeted that he believed that the share price of Tesla was too high which resulted in wiping out of $14bn from the market value of the company.
There was a little controversy online because of his latest tweet on price hike for self driving cars with some questioning the $100,000 or more value he claims the self-driving software will be worth.
The value for the worth of the self-driving package that Musk claimed in his tweet was “insane” said one reply. “Elon, real talk, i love you and the mission, but FSD will never be worth that much,” the tweet added.
The best-selling Tesla Model 3 currently sells for $33,690 in the US if a driver opts for the basic package. With Autopilot this would currently cost $40,690.
