2018 was perhaps the first year that the SUVs became more popular among customers compared to all other niche in the global automotive industry.
Most of the major auto companies have come up with their own version of SUVs that can cater to any type of cars that customers could want – big, small, high performing or super-efficient.
The announcement that both Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce, companies that are positioned on completely opposite poles in the ultra-luxury vehicle niche, of them developing their respective SUVs was like the final pointer to the wining year for SUVs.
For many a SUV from the Lamborghini stable was way out of consideration because the Italian automaker is known for never compromising on intestine-twisting performance. The Lamborghini Urus is truly a genuine super-SUV – it is fast, flashy, loud and can move like a sports car. Many consider the Lamborghini Urus to be a SUV alternative to a supercar.
On the other hand, Rolls-Royce is known to fit its cars with immensely powerful engines but not aiming for outright speed. Rather, the V12 engines from Rolls-Royces are designed never to feel or sound strained even when the vehicles manage to touch a speed of 60 miles an hour in five seconds in a sedan that weighs 5,600 pound.
That same 6.8-liter V12 engine has been fitted in the Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV and has been equipped with similar plush and comfortable interior as the sedans. However the SUVs are taller with all-wheel-drive. It is considered to be amongst the most opulent SUV one can buy.
This year, the fully electric Jaguar I-Pace was also launched in the market. While not actually being as tall as SUVs typically are, this vehicle stands just slightly taller than a typical car. The uniqueness of this car however is the low center of gravity imparted by its battery pack which makes this I-Pace very comfortable to drive. Many describe this vehicle to be amongst the most enjoyable electric vehicles currently available in the market.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk with 707 combustion-derived horsepower from its supercharged 6.2-liter V8 stands out as the SUV at the other end of the spectrum. While not being as luxurious as the Urus, the Trackhawk certainly would please customers. It is terrifically fast and loud.
Even though almost everyone associated luxury with size, a few of the most notable luxury SUVs in current times are actually quite small compared to traditional SUVs. The Volvo XC40 and Jaguar E-Pace are successful examples of this and have been able to convey the style of their brands even through the smaller size.
There are automakers are trying to further develop vehicles that are nit quite SUVs but has the chance to be transformed into one. The Buick Regal TourX, launched in the US last in the current year is an example of such a vehicle.
