Sharp is finally making its long-awaited entry into the advanced display panel market.
On Wednesday, Sharp Corp stated, it would place its first OLED smartphone for sale in Japan later this year.
The announcement marks its long-awaited entry into the market for advanced panels as it plays catch up with Samsung Electronics.
Sharp also aims to sell its OLED panels to other device makers but has yet to make any deal, said its spokeswoman.
Sharp, one of the principle suppliers of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels for Apple Inc’s iPhones, has been slow to shift to the thinner, more flexible OLED screens due to significantly higher production costs, said company executives.
