Tesla has dismissed the lawsuit saying it has no merits.
Nikola Motor Co, a maker of hydrogen-powered semi trucks, has filed a lawsuit Tesla Inc for alleged infringements on its patent design.
In a court filing, Nikola Motor stated Tesla Inc’s Semi, its first electric heavy duty truck, is “substantially” similar to its design.
According to Nikola Motor, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had issued it 6 design patents, between February and April 2018, for its mid-entry door, wrap windshield, fuselage, side cladding and fender and the overall design of the Nikola One.
“Nikola estimates its harm from Tesla’s infringement to be in excess of $2 billion,” it said in its court filing.
Rejected the claims, Tesla’s spokesman said “It’s patently obvious there is no merit to this lawsuit”.
In November 2017, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk had unveiled the Tesla Semi saying commercial production would begin in 2019.
