New Unmanned Cargo Drone Aimed At Future Logistics Market Unveiled By Boeing

The prototype of an unmanned electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing cargo drone was unveiled in Wednesday by Boeing, world’s largest aircraft manufacturer.

The cargo air vehicle (CAV) is aimed at the future market for cargo and logistics and the craft has a carrying capacity of up to 500 pounds (about 450 kg), Boeing said in a statement.

Boeing is planning to use this newest aircraft to test its capability of innovation and development of technologies for future aerospace vehicles and the CAV would be powered by an electric propulsion system which is also very environmentally-friendly.

“This flying cargo air vehicle represents another major step in our Boeing eVTOL strategy,” said Boeing Chief Technology Officer Greg Hyslop.

“We have an opportunity to really change air travel and transport, and we’ll look back on this day as a major step in that journey,” he said.

The company said that the CAV prototype took less three months too build – from designing to production, by a team of Boeing engineers and technicians.

The world’s top aerospace leader said that initial flight tests for the CAV was successfully conducted at a Boeing lab facility in Missouri.

“Our new CAV prototype builds on Boeing’s existing unmanned systems capabilities and presents new possibilities for autonomous cargo delivery, logistics and other transportation applications,” said Steve Nordlund, vice president of Boeing HorizonX, the unit that develops the CAV.

Weighing a total of 339 kilograms, the measurements of the CAV prototype are 4.57 m in length, 5.49 m in width and 1.22 m in height. There are eight counter rotating blades fitted on the craft that give it the necessity power to fly vertically.

Chicago-based Boeing is considered to be biggest manufacturer of in the world for commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems and it was established more than 100 years ago.

fixed-wing aircraft, rotorcraft, rockets and satellites are also designed and produced by the company. the company has over 170,000 employees in 70 countries all over the world including the United States.
