Japan considering levying departure tax on all airlines

While the move is expected to dent the already low margins of low-cost carriers, it is to be seen how it will impact inbound visitors.

On Tuesday, Shinya Katanozaka, the CEO of Japan’s biggest airline by revenue stated, if Japan were to impose a departure tax on airlines, its impact will ripple though a big radius and could significantly hurt low-cost carriers.

Shinya Katanozaka, ANA Holdings Inc’s Chief Executive, said, at present it would be difficult to gauge the impact of this proposed tax on how it would effect the number of inbound visitors.

His comments come in the wake of the Japanese government weighing its options of imposing a up to $8.89 (1,000 yen) levy on travelers departing the country.
