In a significant step for the future of next gen public transport, HTT has begun building the pod that will carry passengers at close to the speed of sound.
In a significant development that could see through the next stage in public transport systems, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) has stated that it will begin the construction of its first passenger capsule, which is expected to be unveiled in early 2018.
HTT has stated that the pod will be tweaked and tested at its Toulouse headquarters. Once it is ready to run, it will be the first “commercial” Hyperloop system that the company will run in the near future.
With this announcement, HTT has also revealed the specifications of the new travel capsule, which will be 2.7 meters wide, 30 meters long and will weigh 20 tons.
With a capacity carrying load of 28 to 40 passengers, the pod is expected to have a top speed of 760mph, very close to the sound barrier of 767mph.
HTT has said it is hard to make a comparison with its transport system and the railways, since Hyperloop is closer to flying than the speed experienced in traditional passenger railways.
For those who are insistent on comparing the two different technologies, Amtrak’s Acela Express offers a sense of scale between the two: a typical Acela Express carriage has a capacity of 65, is 26 meters long and weighs nearly 63 tons. Comparing the speed is lame, since HTT’s speed is of a totally different magnitude altogether.
While there are two companies pushing the hyperloop technology, HTT has taken a different approach than its better-heeled rival, Hyperloop One which is building a track rather than a capsule.
All eyes are now on HTT’s ability to translate its crowdsourced knowledge into reality not to mention its ability to deliver on a complex transportation platform.
