NASA’s whisper quiet supersonic jet undergoes wind tunnel tests

The X-plane is a joint collaboration between Lockheed Martin and NASA.

NASA’s quest to create a supersonic jet, the QueSST, that is incredibly quiet took a step closer to reality with NASA and Lockheed Martin stating wind tunnel tests for the X-plane.

Although currently at this stage, it is only a scale that is being subjected to Mach 1.6 (950MPH) winds to gauge the aerodynamic performance as well as parts of the propulsion system. Testing will complete by the middle of 2017.

For QueSST to move to the next stage, will require further approval for funding. As and when that goes though, the next phase will see an actual aircraft poised to take to the air in 2020.

Although that final stage is still some time away, the wind tunnel tests makes the project closer to reality.
