Twitter sells its Fabric platform to Google

The move comes midst Twitter’s withdrawal from the e-commerce market while it looks to focus on its core products.

Google has purchased Twitter’s developer platform which is known as Fabric.

Acquired by Twitter in 2014, Fabric is a “a modular mobile platform” that is designed to aid programmers to improve the “stability, distribution, revenue and identity” of their apps. Right from the ability to natively embed tweets into other apps, to the ability to sign in with your Twitter credentials into other apps, were made possible thanks to Fabric.

Now that Fabric is in Google’s stable, it will now be merged with its Firebase development platform.

“We quickly realized that our missions are the same – helping mobile teams build better apps, understand their users, and grow their businesses,” wrote the Fabric team wrote in its announcement.  “Fabric and Firebase operate mobile platforms with unique strengths in the market today.”

Despite the integration of Fabrice into Google’s Firebase, existing Fabric users needn’t panic: the platform will still continue to operate, however they will have to agree to the new terms of service which will be made available once the deal is completed.

On its part, Twitter plans to keep investing in its public APIs and “Publisher Platform products including Twitter Kit and TweetDeck… Ads API, MoPub, and Gnip.”

However, Twitter has now begun notifying its customers (e-commerce platform) that it is phasing out its in-app “Buy” button as part of a larger move to slowly retract from the e-commerce market, “as a result of the Twitter team pivoting away from their e-commerce focus.”

Twitter will nonetheless continue to allow users to make donations to charitable causes for the foreseeable future.
