Disney+ service registers 8M paid subscribers in India in 1 week after rollout, crosses 50M paid subscribers globally

In a statement, Walt Disney Co said, its streaming service Disney+ has had a massive fan following and has registered 50 million paid consumers, with 8 million alone coming from India where the video streaming service was rolled out just a week back.

As of this last quarter’s report, Netflix Inc reported a subscriber base of 167 million paid subscribers globally.

With the coronavirus pandemic forcing cities to go under lockdown, there has been a rise in the trend of working from home. It has also resulted in a boom of streaming, communication and online gaming.

In the last two weeks, Walt Disney rolled out Disney+ in eight European countries, including France, Ireland, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria.

It was launched in the United States in November 2019.

Walt Disney’s Disney+ service was rolled out in India in conjunction with the Hotstar streaming platform, which was acquired as part of Disney’s $71 billion purchase of Twenty-First Century Fox in 2019.
