Hackers use exploits in Microsoft Word to steal millions

Always keep your software updated. Outdated software are prone to malicious code from hackers. If you are using Microsoft Word, you are advised to keep it updated. Do not open files sent by unknown sources.

So as to get a grip on the basic challenges faced by computer security experts from a moderately capable hacker, consider the case of the security flaw officially known as CVE-2017-0199.

The bug, of a common genre, had the potential to allow a hacker to seize control of a personal computer and was supposedly fixed on April 11 through Microsoft’s regular monthly security update.

Security researchers at Google typically provide a window of 90 days before they publish details of the bugs. In this case Microsoft took nearly 9 months to fix it.

While Microsoft brooded and investigated the matter, hackers having discovered the flaw exploited it to their advantage.

A group of low level hackers used the exploit to steal from millions in Australia and in other countries.

These conclusions have come from myriad interviews with security researchers from Cyber security firms who have studied these events in details and have analyzed versions of the attack code.

As yet it is unclear as to how many people are affected by this attack code as well as how much was stolen.
