Toyota’s hybrid vehicles sales point to a greener future

Wholehearted adoption of EVs could help reduce CO2 levels, especially since as per the EPA 25% of CO2 emissions can be traced to the transportation sector.

In signs of growing consumer awareness towards the environment Toyota has disclosed that as of January 31, it has sold more than 10 million hybrid cars and 1 million of those have been since April 2016.

“When we launched Prius, no one even knew what a hybrid was,” said Takeshi Uchiyamada, chairman of the Board of Directors at Toyota. “Those who drove it were called geeks or other names. Today, thanks to those early adopters who gave Prius a chance, hybrids have grown in popularity, and have ridden a wave of success out of the unknown and into the mainstream.”

Introduced in 1997, Toyota Prius was the world’s first mass-produced hybrid electric vehicle. Since its launch, the sales of hybrid cars have grown phenomenally, with energy efficient cars accounting for more than 3% of new vehicles sold in 2013.

Although this number dipped by 2% in 2015 due to rock bottom fossil fuel prices, Continental AG, a German automotive manufacturing company, has predicted that the sales of hybrid cars are stated to jump by more than 20% by 2020 thanks to countries meeting low emission goals.

Already in the United States, more than 3 million Lexus and Toyota hybrid vehicles have been sold; as for the UK, consumers have purchased more than a quarter million hybrids.

As per Toyota’s estimates, the impact of hybrid cars on our environment is the reduction of 77 million tons of CO2; in terms of gas saved, the figure comes to a whopping 8 million gallons.

Although the figures in millions sound pretty impressive, in the bigger picture its just a drop in the bucket, especially since nearly 1,750 million tons of greenhouse gasses are let out by our automobiles, trains and plans every year.

With 25% of the 1,750 million tons coming from the transportation sector, every bit counts.
