Razer acquires Nextbit

Its cloud phone Robin will continue to get updates through February 2018.

In these last couple of years, Razer has been quite active in the mergers & acquisition scene: the company has acquired THX and Ouya and is now vying to purchase Nextbit.

Unfortunately, despite this spate of rampant acquisitions, Razer’s Robin, the “cloud phone” that it launched last year turned out to be “beautiful, but flawed.”

On a similar note, its last major announcement was the cancellation of its plans for a CDMA version of the Robin’s variant.

Luckily there is some good news surrounding the company too. Although the Robin has also been removed from sales, Nextbit has clarified it will continue to provide updates and security patches through February 2018; furthermore, it will also fulfill warranties for another six months.

“And yes, it’s a good thing. We’re actually excited about it,” said Eric Lin, head of product marketing.

With Razer acquiring NextBit, its CEO Min-Liang Tan was all exited about the acquisition saying, “With the talent that Nextbit brings to Razer, we look forward to unleashing more disruption and growing our business in new areas.”

Although it has been ten long years when Razer promised to “double down” on its Android-powered Forge TV, the world has however not heard much about it at all.

Perhaps it is the mobile angle that will help the company pull through its sales strategy after all.
