Having provide a few strategic peeks designed to entice interest in its luxury sedan, Lucid has now finally removed the wraps of its $100,000 electric luxury vehicle – Air.
By launching Air, Lucid is not only aiming to take a potshot at Tesla’s Model S but also at Mercedes-Benz’s S Class and BMW’s 7 series.
Lucid is expected to start production of Air sometime in 2018 at its Arizona plant.
In today’s event, it showcased prospective buyers details of its luxury car, including its impressive battery pack – the largest in the automotive world.
Although the standard version of Air comes packed with a 100 kWh battery, just like Tesla’s Model S, however Air offers an upgrade to 130 kWh. For the battery tech, Lucid has partnered with Samsung SDI.
Air provides an impressive range of 400 miles per charge.
While Lucid is certain that Air will fulfill the luxury needs of a sports and luxury cars, speed enthusiasts will be glad to know that Air is equipped with 600HP motors which have been integrated with the HVAC and suspension system in the front of the vehicle.
As for the rear wheels, they have the same setup with an integrated transmission, suspension and motor.
Thanks to design tweaks, Air provide increased seating capacity, said Lucid’s CTO, Peter Rawlinson. He went on to add, everything has been pushed to the edge of the car.
The combined output of its motors tops at 1,000 horsepower with a zero to 60 MPH of 2.5 seconds.
The Air also has autonomous driving features, including short and long range radars, Lidar and cameras.
During its launch only a few select options of the self-driving features will be made available. More will be added with over-the-air updates.
Naturally, the car comes with its own companion app which uses voice control features similar to that of Siri and Amazon Echo, to control aspects of features inside the car.
As one might expect, fully topped up, Air will cost more than $100,000. However, in the future, a more accessible $65,000 version of it will also be produced.
