The power generated by the tiles will not only power the square’s fountain but also the electrical needs for its public toilet.
In a development that could potentially increase the onset of solar energy in our lives, Solar Roadway has installed its first solar tiles in Sandpoint, Idaho, as part of a public test.
The tiles will not produce a beautiful light show, but more importantly will also generate power for the restrooms and fountains in the public square. So as to keep them running in winter, the tiles are fitted with heating elements too.
In case you want to check it out for yourself, Sandpoint has a live webcam pointed at the tiles.
Currently the test has just 30 panels. If everything goes as per plan, their adoption could be more widespread. Imagine an entire town square powered by solar tiles. A significant amount of a city’s energy demand can be met this way.
