After meeting with President Joko Widodo of Indonesia, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the business will “look at” manufacturing there. This comes at a time when the iPhone behemoth is actively diversifying its supply chain to move away from China.
“We talked about the president’s desire to see manufacturing in the country and it’s something that we will look at,” Cook told reporters after the meeting.
“I think the investment ability in Indonesia is endless. I think that there’s a lot of great places to invest. And we’re investing. We believe in the country.”
Apple has been making a greater effort to diversify its production base outside of China over the last three years, ever since the Covid-19 outbreak revealed the Cupertino giant’s dependence on the second-largest economy in the world.
At Foxconn, Apple’s assembly partner, the main iPhone factory in China, Covid caused production and operational disruptions.
Since then, Apple has made an effort to diversify its production base.
Vietnam has benefited greatly, growing to become one of Apple’s main non-Chinese manufacturing hubs. There, goods like the MacBook, iPad, and Apple Watch are produced. Cook spent earlier this week in Vietnam.
Apple has increased its production in India as well.
As per a Bloomberg report, Apple now produces 1 in 7 or 14% of its iPhones in India, which is twice the quantity it did the previous year.
