Tencent Announces Its Most Ambitious Console Game To Date As It Expands Globally

Last Sentinel, a high-budget console game, was unveiled by Chinese digital giant Tencent Holdings on Friday. This is said to be the company’s most ambitious console entry to yet.

At The Game Awards in Los Angeles, the action role-playing game’s teaser was shown by the Shenzhen-based company. At Tencent’s Lightspeed LA game studio, a crucial U.S. studio at the centre of Tencent’s worldwide development efforts, the title is being created by roughly 200 employees.

The release date for Last Sentinel, which pits players against robots in a dystopian Japan, has not been disclosed by Tencent.

To strengthen its position in console gaming, Tencent hired Steve Martin in 2020. Martin is a well-known industry veteran who has contributed to some of the most popular console games ever, including Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.

Chinese players have historically spent more on mobile games, which are usually less expensive to make. Tencent is well recognised for creating well-known mobile games like PUBG Mobile.

However, Tencent is investing heavily in high-end console games as it seeks to both grow internationally and meet the evolving tastes of Chinese consumers domestically.

Last Sentinel will demonstrate Tencent’s internal development skills, but the business has also amassed substantial holdings in a number of the top game studios worldwide, including a 30% share in Larian Studios, the company behind Baldur’s Gate 3.
