IEEE lifts curbs on Huawei subsidiaries and employees

While U.S. based IEEE has lifted its curbs, Beijing-based technology research group The China Computer Federation (CCF) has yet to reciprocate.

On Monday, in contrast to the ham fisted stand taken by China, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) disclosed, it has lifted curbs on employees of Huawei Technologies and its subsidiaries; they will be allowed to participate in a peer review process for its research papers.

In a statement placed at its website, IEEE China said, it took the decision after receiving further clarifications from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

“Our previous restrictive approach was wholly meant to protect our volunteers and members and to avoid relevant legal risks. After we received the relevant instructions, the legal risks were lifted,” said IEEE China.

On Thursday, Beijing-based technology research group The China Computer Federation (CCF) had said it would suspend communications with IEEE.

IEEE’s gesture has so far not been reciprocated by CCF.
