US Administration Underestimated Huawei, Says Its Founder Ren Zhengfei

The measure to ban Chinese tech and telecom equipment giant Huawei by the United States administration has not caused a flutter at the company as was evident in the words and statement issued by the company’s founder Ren Zhengfei who remained defiant about the US moves.  He claimed that the US administration has made a wrong estimation of the abilities of the company.

The impact of the US ban on Huawei was clearly downplayed by Ren while speaking to the Chinese state media. In the interview he said that it was not possible for anyone to catch up with its 5G technology in the near future.

Huawei was added to the so called “Entity List” of the US Commerce Department after the passing an executive order by US president Donald Trump banning US telecom companies from dealing in products or technologies with foreign companies or entities that are perceived to be a threat to the national security of the country. That blacklisting of the Huawie effectively made banned it form doing any business in the US and using any services of its extensive supply chain in the country. Huawei would have to take license from the US government to deal with US telecom companies.

That measure by the Trump administration is being viewed by Beijing as an intensificaitonof eth US-China trade war.

“The current practice of US politicians underestimates our strength,” Ren said, according to transcripts from state media.

Huawei in recent times, has been facing allegations from a number of Western countries of its telecom equipment being used by Chinese agencies to spy on western countries and hence it is perceived to be threat to national security by countries like the US and Australia from where it had earlier been banned to participate in the roll of the 5G mobile technology.

On there were reports on Monday that Google has decided not do business with Huawei following the blacklisting of the Chinese firm which meant that some Google updates would not be possible on Huawei phones using Android operating system.

The US issued a license on Monday to Huawei allowing it to engage in business to the extent that it is able to serve its current and existing customers – primarily those telecom service providing companies that use its equipments, networks and devices. The US Commerce Department said that the license issued to Huawei would be for a period of 90 days that “will allow operations to continue for existing Huawei mobile phone users and rural broadband networks,” said US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.

Advice for Huawei phone owners on its site has bene published by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre. It said the licence should mean that Huawei customers can “update their handsets as normal”. It added that it was continuing to assess the situation and planned to provide advice in the future for users.

Yet the significance of the move by the US was played down by Ren and said that preparations anticipating such a measure from the US had already been taken by Huawei.
