U.S. telecom regulators to announce conditions for approving Sprint-T-Mobile merger

Before they give a go-ahead to the merger, regulators will have to factor in the potential loss of competition which will lead to higher consumer prices against the prospect of a more powerful No. wireless carrier which can work to build a faster, better next generation 5G wireless network.

According to sources U.S. regulators are expected to announce the conditions for approving the merger of Sprint Corp and T-Mobile US Inc.

As the merger proposals stands, the Federal Communications Commission is unlikely to approve the deal. It will instead draft an order laying down conditions for the proposed merger. This agreement however will not go to resolve the U.S. Justice Department’s ongoing review of the merger.

On Monday, T-Mobile and Sprint had filed commitments with the FCC in the hopes of winning an approval for their merger, said a source familiar with the matter at hand.

Once the FCC drafts an order, the five-member commission will then vote to either approve or reject the deal.

Yesterday, T-Mobile had stated that along with Sprint Corp it was extending a deadline to complete the deal by July 29.

The two are among just four national wireless carriers, with Verizon Communications and AT&T leading the pack.

Regulators are expected to take a final call on the matter in early June. They will be weighing a potential loss of competition, which is likely to lead to higher prices for consumers, against the prospect of a more powerful No. 3 wireless carrier which can work to build a faster, better next generation 5G wireless network.
