Mike Pompeo’s underscores and highlights the growing and significant risks to using Chinese technology given their connection to the Chinese state.
On Friday, Mike Pompeo, the Secretary of State of the United States of America highlighted the fact that the countries need to keep their “eyes wide open” on the risks of using Chinese technology and that there are risks for American firms operating in certain places where Huawei equipment has been deployed.
Pompeo made these comments on a visit to Manila in reference to the Philippines potentially allowing China’s Huawei to install 5G equipment in the country.
“Our task has been to share with the world the risks associated with that technology: the risks to the Philippine people, the risk to Philippine security, the risk that America may not be able to operate in certain environments if there is Huawei technology adjacent to that,” said Pompeo at a news conference.
He went on to add, “We want to make sure that the world has their eyes wide open as to the risks of having that technology to be part of infrastructure, backbone or networks.”
Intelligence agencies across several nations have stated Huawei’s telecom equipment could potentially be a trojan horse for Chinese intelligence and have thus advised allies to avoid using them.
