Volkswagen joins Baidu’s Apollo autonomous driving consortium

The consortium, of more than 130 partners, is aimed at developing self-driving car technology for the Chinese market.

The European Union’s biggest carmaker, Volkswagen AG, stated it would join China’s Apollo autonomous driving consortium so as to develop self-driving car technology in the world’s biggest car market.

In 2017, Baidu created the Apollo consortium to compete against U.S. technology and carmakers including Google’s Waymo and Tesla.

VW said, it will get a seat in Apollo’s management board.

Baidu’s consortium has more than 130 partners which includes BMW; it has stated it will commence testing self-driving cars with Ford by the end of 2018.

The development comes at a time when Volkswagen is exploring a broad partnership with Ford to develop electric and autonomous cars.
