Following the accusation that a driver of China’s biggest ride-hailing company, Didi Chuxing, had raped and killed a woman passenger, the company announced the suspension of one of its services for the second time this year.
While apologizing for “disappointing mistakes”, the company said that it has dismissed two senior managers after the incident that took place in the eastern coastal city of Wenzhou on Friday.
This is the second time within h\just four months that company has bene forced to suspend its carpooling service Hitch after the murder of a woman passenger. The latest incident has drawn flack form users of the service on social media who have expressed concerns about their safety while using the service.
The driver was arrested by the police on Saturdays morning and it has been reported that the accused has confessed of committing the crimes.
According to Chinese state media Xinhua, the government demanded that the ride hailing company undertake “comprehensive rectification” of the service.
Didi became globally known two years ago when it edged Uber out of the Chinese market. It is also amongst the biggest startup sin the world. The valuation of the company as of December 2017 was $56 billion as it has continued to expand into more and more new markets throughout the world including Australia and Mexico. The backers of the company include names like Apple Inc and SoftBank of Japan.
In a statement Didi said that the day before the crime, a complaint against the accused driver had been lodged with the company but a customer service representative “failed to follow up with investigation within two hours,” according to the policy of the company. the statement said that the company is “deeply sorry” and continues “to work with the police and seek adequate settlement with the family” of the victim.
According to the police, messages seeking help to one of her friends was sent by the woman before she was murdered. According to state media, the victim woman was 20 years old and the suspect is 27.
The loopholes in the policy of reporting of issues with drivers is revealed through the incident, said the company. The general manager and the vice president for customer services of Hitch have bene removed form their jobs.
“The incident shows the many deficiencies with our customer service processes, especially the failure to act swiftly on the previous passenger’s complaint and the cumbersome and rigid process of information sharing with the police,” Didi said.
There are a number of app-based transportation services operated by Didi in China and Hitch is one of them. The services offered by Didi include ones like shuttle buses, bike sharing and food delivery. The main ride-hailing service of the company is Didi Express which accounts for the largest part of its business. it is the most dominating businesses of the company in terms of the number of rides.
