With this development, self-driving cars are a step closer to retail reality.
In a significant development, Alphabet’s self-driving car unit Waymo has disclosed it is retiring its Firefly line of test vehicles and is now moving on to integrating its technology into mass-produced vehicles.
Initially, Waymo will move to equip its 600 Chrysler Pacifica minivans with custom-built radar and vision systems, and install a brand new artificial intelligence platform on them to enable the cars to see even further with greater resolution, said the company.
“By focusing on mass-produced vehicles like the Pacifica minivan, we’ll be able to bring fully self-driving technology to more people, more quickly,” said Waymo in a blog post.
After the technology transfer, the self-driving minivans will be able to cruise at full speed in comparison to its earlier 25 miles per hour artificial limit.
