Amazon could soon become an ISP in Europe with value added benefits

Having identified strategic legal backing for its business plans in Europe, Amazon’s entire gameplan is likely to revolve around its Prime and related services.

Amazon has set its eyes on Europe. It plans on increasing its foothold on the continent by bringing more customers in its fold through speedy deliveries and by enticing them through its award winning TV series.

As per The Information, Amazon is planning to collaborate with a Hollywood production studio in order to become an internet service provider in Europe.

As you might have guessed, Amazon.com has a cunning plan. By becoming an ISP in Europe, Amazon can bundle Prime video streaming services, as well as the rest of Prime, in its data plans to customers, thus increasing and consolidating its foothold in that continent.

With Alphabet hitting some snags on the rollout of Google Fiber broadband services back home in the United States, regulations for ISP in countries such as Germany and UK make it much simpler for budding ISP to setup shop without having to build their own network.

Whereas most broadband service providers restrict access to their network, in the U.K, for example, British Telecom is required by law to offer wholesale access to its network.

Clearly Amazon is wanting to tap into that. It could start small and re-sell access to the net at cost while bundling in additional value added Prime related benefits to improve its core margins and retail business. It could also sell acess to additional cable channels like Showtime and Starz, as it does in the US.
