Pinterest acquires Instapaper to rule the bookmarking market

This strategic acquisition will help it position itself in the centre stage of the web-bookmarking market.

Pinterest is more than just a bunch of photos from which you can choose your wardrobe. Since its inception, the service also has a save-for-later-reading feature, although it’s not really well known for that.

However, in a step to redress that wanting, Pinterest has announced that it has acquired Instapaper, one of the most popular read-it-later apps in the market today.

According to the company, through this acquisition, Pinterest has acquired both the team behind the Instapaper and the technology. This will help Pinterest to “accelerate discovering and saving articles on Pinterest.”

Instapaper fans need not worry since its developpers will keep it alive as a standalone app.

Significantly, the acquisition isn’t about saving articles for reading at a later date, instead it is about integrating Instapaper’s search technology into Pinterest.

“As the world’s catalog of ideas, we’re focused on making it easy to save and discover content on any device. The Instapaper team are experts in saving, curating and analyzing articles, and they’re a welcome addition to Pinterest. Instapaper will work with us to continue building indexing and recommendations technologies, and we look forward to building great products together,” said Steve Davis, lead product manager at Pinterest in a statement.

In many ways, this acquisition makes sense since it allows Pinterest to leverage a not-so-popular feature that was available since its inception. Furthermore using Instapaper’s technology, Pinterest could help you uncover undiscovered pins too.

In fact, Pinterest could position itself as a one-stop shop for bookmarking anything and everything on the web. The company has in fact changed its “Pin It” button to “Save”  to signify just that. Although other bookmarking sites are also available, few have Pinterest’s clout.

“The missions of Instapaper and Pinterest are aligned in helping people easily save content,” said Brian Donohue, Instapaper’s CEO, in a statement.

He went on to add, “The Pinterest team is working on unique technical challenges, and their collective skill will add tremendous value to Instapaper.”
