With critics pointing out that the ‘E’ in Mercedes Benz’s 2017 E-class sedan could mislead consumers into thinking that it is an autonomous vehicle, the company has pulled the advertisement for the 2017 E-class sedan.

In the ad, the 2017 E-class sedan is seen overtaking the F016, Mercedes Benz’s autonomous concept car which looks like as though it came straight out from Minority Report. The ad then goes on to ask – “Is the world truly ready for a vehicle that can drive itself? Ready or not, the future is here” In the ad, the sedan’s driver then takes his hands off the wheel of the moving car, thereby suggesting that the car is driving by itself.

Although, self-driving cars are great, the problem is that the E-class sedan, in question, isn’t an autonomous vehicle. It only has a driver assist feature by the name of “Drive Pilot” for cruise control and automated steering, which incidentally has been designed to remind drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel.

Automotive News has reported that safety advocates including Automotive Safety and Consumer Reports have asked the FTC to investigate the company and this ad.

Mercedes has pulled the ad.

“The new 2017 E class is a technological tour de force and is a significant step towards achieving our vision of an accident-free futur:We do not want any potential confusion in the marketplace to detract from the giant step forward in vehicle safety the 2017 E class represents,” said a spokesperson from Mercedes.
