Joint Task Force Ares to neuter ISIS’s online activities in Iraq and Syria

Disrupting enemy communications could be key to saving civilian lives.

Michael S. Rogers, the Command in Chief of U.S Cyber Command, has created a dedicated team tasked to develop a suite of digital weaponry, including malware, with which the United States can wage war in the Cyberspace against ISIS.

Earlier this year, the Pentagon had given Cyber Command the go ahead for launching online attacks against Daesh.

According to the Washington Post, Cyber Command was not fully geared up for this task of launching online attacks against the Islamic State. Whereas earlier it lacked the needed tools and the trained staff, the new team, “Joint Task Force Ares,” has the capability to disrupt the terrorist group’s wage payment system. It can also disrupt their communications and thus cause chaos.

The capability of disrupting communications could be useful in reducing civilian casualties as their communications can be cut off before blasting them from their hideouts, thus neutering their strategy of using civilians as human shields.

Although Cyber Command will be in charge of the offensive weapons, it will not be responsible for the acquiring the military’s targets for airstrikes.

At this juncture, Joint Task Force Ares will only be deployed against ISIS in Syria and Iraq. However, the unit will go global in the future.
