It is not just about quality, it could be more about how fast and efficiently you can produce to stay relevant in the market. Tesla could be squeezed at both end of the spectrum.
Being a luxury car manufacturing company, it should not come as a surprise that Mercedes-Benz has used the partnering route as a means to compete with Tesla Motors.
As per David McCarthy from Mercedes-Benz, the company will release a concept version of its Tesla-beating electric sedan near about September or just before the Paris Motor Show.
Mercedes-Benz is keeping the specs of the concept car close to its chest: even McCarthy is clueless about it. However, you wouldn’t be wrong to place in the Tesla’s Model S’s price bracket and expect similar driving range. It’s likely to be launched sometime in 2018. Previous teasers had said that it would be “dangerously fast,” erasing any doubts for the performance minded driver.
Although Mercedes-Benz could find the going tough when compared to Tesla product baskets, design and specs-wise, its ace in the hole could be its production process: as noted by McCarthy, Tesla could find it challenging to stick to its production schedule, on time and within budget.
That however, will not be a problem for an industry veteran such as Mercedes-Benz, said McCarthy. Although he admits the end result may not be a “Tesla killer,” however Tesla will “probably have good reason” to worry about what will come out from Mercedes-Benz’s stable.
However, if Tesla manages to produce its Model 3, which is aimed at the low-costs electric car market, within budget and in time, it could give a tough competition to not only Mercedes-Benz in the high-end spectrum of the market but also to Daimler’s Smart Fortwo Electric car.
Here’s hoping Tesla production runs goes smoothly.
