Luminati tests solar aircraft for providing last mile internet access

Although currently the aircraft was piloted by a human, Luminati wants them to be drones that will never need to land.

It appears that Solar Impulse 2, is not the only aircraft which has reached a major milestone: Luminati Aerospace has also conducted a public flight test of its prototype solar aircraft.

Called the VO-Substrata, the flight test of the solar aircraft represents a major stepping stone for drones that are set to be instrumental for providing last mile internet access in hard to reach areas.

Although currently the early prototype of the aircraft involves the usage of a human pilot, eventually Luminati will want a pilotless vehicle that can fly as high as 60,000 feet and never have to land.

If the tests meet the design parameters, Luminati wil start manufacturing the drone by early 2017.

The business of providing last mile internet access is becoming hot as 5G services with 7Gbps internet access are set to roll out in the near future. Giants such as Google and Facebook have also invested in this sector.

With such heavyweights around, Luminati has raised a few eyebrows, as institutions such as MIT and Georgia Tech, are backing it. Additionally, there is also a yet to be disclosed tech company that is helping it behind the scenes.

If Luminati can manage to fulfill its ambitions, it could play a significant role in providing reliable last mile access to people around the globe.
