It’s been a while the Blocks modular smartwatch first made its appearance on Kickstarter. Thankfully for the backers, the project is close to hitting the assembly lines. Blocks has to fulfill at least 5,500 orders from its originals backers from Kickstarter, apart from those who are now willing to shell out $330, the asking price for the modular smartwatch.
Its already behind its May 2016 delivery schedule, so it would be heartening for the original pledgers to see some progress. Blocks has said its Android-based smartwatches are currently undergoing final testing before they hit the mass production lines. They are scheduled to ship in September this year.
6 modules will be available at launch including, a module for an extra battery, a GPS unit, a flashlight, a programmable button, a pulse sensor and a humidity/temperature/altitude sensor. Other add-ons, including, gesture control, fingerprint authentication, perspiration and body temperature monitoring are in the works.
Since Blocks uses Android, an open platform, third-party developers can make add-ons once the device is launched and there is a market for them.
Each purchase comes with a watch face, which Blocks calls a “Core”. The smartwatch will ship with four modules that form the strap; the watch comes with five links to accommodate those with a thicker wrist.
If all goes well, a modular smartwatch could soon be hitting the market in the near future.
