Adidas becoming increasingly more environmental friendly in its products

Check out the Adidas X Parleys.

In a commendable effort to integrate the recycling of ocean waste into a usable product, Adidas has announced that it will release a shoe this year manufactured from recycled ocean waste.

Already last year, as part of its collaboration with Parley, an anti-ocean-pollution non-profit organization, Adidas had showed off a3D printed mid-sole from recycled ocean plastic. Taking off from that concept, the sportswear manufacturer is now showing off its latest product titled Adidas x Parley.

The limited-edition shoe’s upper is made from a combination of illegal deep-sea gillnets and Parley Ocean Plastic. The deep-sea gillnets have been retrieved by Sea Shepherd, a NPO whose mission is to protect life forms in the Southern Ocean.

The shoe’s launch will coincide with World Oceans Day. Being a limited edition, only fifty pairs will be manufactured and will be given away from a contest on Instagram.

Although all of this recycling news is pretty exciting stuff, what’s even more exciting is the fact that Adidas will launch a commercial version of the shoe which integrates Parley Ocean Plastic into one of its “top footwear franchises”. Expect this launch to take place sometime in the second half of this year.

The fact that it can integrate ocean plastic into its products is an indicator that “technical yarn fibres” technology has matured enough so that it can be integrated into a manufacturing process.

Earlier it has already announced that it will stop the usage of plastic bags in its stores as well as stop using microbeads in its shower gel products. In addition to that, this step is yet another example of Adidas making inroads in being increasingly more environment friendly.

If you are interested in snagging a pair of Adidas x Parleys make sure you are awake and active on a at least a couple of social media channels on July 31st, where Adidas will run you through the rules of its contest.
