Walmart testing drones in its warehouses

Walmart is putting drones to count its inventories in its warehouses.

Counting inventories every day can be one of the most monotonous jobs on the planet. In a drive towards increased efficiency, and in a move that essentially capitalizes the one thing machines are awesome at – doing the same thing over and over again – Walmart is all set to operationalize drones for this very purpose.

The world’s largest retailer is now running tests to check if camera equipped drones could help speed up its inventory counting process in massive warehouses.

According to a recent demonstration of the technology, the results are rather promising – the drones could potentially do a month’s worth of human labor in a single day.

Although it sounds astounding, it isn’t very farfetched. For us humans who had to take stock of inventories at Walmart’s warehouses, scanning every product by hand, using ladders and forklifts to reach higher shelves for scanning the barcode of the products was a painfully laborious process.

On the other hand, the drones can in one sweep take snaps with a high speed camera and cover isles very quickly. If the test results of Walmart’s experiment goes as per plan, it could potentially save the company millions of dollars.

It will take another 6 to 9 months before the testing is done so watch this space when it goes operational.
