Although the initiative has good intentions in mind, it has the potential to be misused by the opponents of the service. This could be critical in a state like Arizona where the state government is pondering over whether it should be allowed to operate in the state at all.
Although Airbnb admits that most of its customers are “respectful travellers,” however thanks to those who are manners-challenged, the company has said it will give its respectful travellers the voice to raise concerns when their neighbours are an unruly lot.
It has created a tool called Airbnb Neighbours for this new initiative through which folks can now voice their concerns about usage of common space parking, noise levels, suspicious/criminal activities, and other general concerns.
Once a complaint is lodged, it gets its own case number which Airbnb will review. If deemed necessary, the company will follow up the matter with the listing’s host.
A neighbour can either choose to remain anonymous, or provide contact details so that the host can reach out directly. As per Airbnb, if submissions include a web link for the listing, it can also follow up directly with the neighbour.
Airbnb has clarified that whenever possible, it will give the host and the neighbour the opportunity to resolve the matter between themselves.
“Hosting is a big responsibility and those who repeatedly fail to meet our standards and expectations will be subject to suspension or removal from the Airbnb community,” said the company in a blog post.
While this initiative by Airbnb will be very useful for most travellers, it has the potential for misuse especially for those who have been very vocal about the company’s services.
As Airbnb continues to grow and promote its new age genre of short-term rentals, it is important that both the host and the neighbours feel that their concerns are addressed.
This is especially critical in areas such as Arizona, where the state is pondering over the fact of whether the company should be allowed to be operate at all.
