Is HDHomeRun, a DVR creating alternative, too good to be true?

Those who are looking to record their favourite TV series, should definitely check this out.

Last year, when SiliconDust announced its DIY DVR project, recording your favourite TV series, essentially amounted to either building a power horse of a PC or hooking one up to a dedicated network storage facility.

Having had the time to work out a better alternative solution, a year later, it is now testing its HDHomeRun Record for Android TV, which allows you to create a DVR with just its TV tuner devices and an Android box.

The requirements are still pretty high though – you will need Android 6.0 or higher, a USB 3.0 and an Ethernet connection for external storage. Unfortunately, Google’s Nexus player or Amazon’s Fire TV will not work, however NVIDIA Shield Pro owners are for a bit of a luck, as their 500GB built-in storage will come handy.

Once the serials have been recorded, you can play them back on any device or platform that runs its HDHomeRun View app.

Although, the app is still in the works before it is officially released, once it is out, it aims to let anyone create their own DVR without any need of programming from cable or antenna.

Kickstart backers and subscribers can give it a go right now, but since it is not yet officially released some of the features could have glitches. You will however get app support for Android and OS X, pause and rewing on Live TV, as well as support for protected premium channels.

Since Windows Media Centre has been put to rest and with TiVo being recently acquired, this is an option worth considering if an all-in on internet TV is not for you, just yet.
