By just replacing the front wheel of your bike with one from GeoOrbital’s, you can convert your regular bike into an e-bike that can travel up to 20mph for the next 50 miles.
While electric bikes have been around for decades, they have not managed to make any inroad into the mainstream and have instead stuck to their niche audience.
For those who have a bike but are looking to invest in an e-bike, check this out: GeoOrbital has come out with a solution which allows you to retain your old bike and yet get the benefits of an electric bike. All you need to do is swap the front wheel of your existing ride.
The engineers who have created GeoOrbital’s product have previously worked for companies such as Ford and SpaceX, which know a thing or two about innovation and transportation.
GeoOrbital’s device replaces the front wheel of your bike with a 26-inch or 700c (28-inch/29-inch) size tire. Furthermore, its proprietary tires are foam filled which essentially ensures that your tire will never get flat and punctured.
Additionally, thanks to its lithium-ion battery, you can now ride your bike up to 20mph for 50 miles. It even provides a USB port for charging your electronic devices while you are on the move. Pedaling, going downhill and braking will result in recharging the batteries.
Naturally, all of these benefits come at a cost: additional weight. While normal tires weigh anywhere between 3 to 6 pounds, the weight of GeoOrbital’s tires are in the range of 11 to 17 pounds, depending on the model.
Although early-bird specials have already been sold out, you can still pick up one of their tires for $650 on the company’s kickstarter campaign. Units will be shipped in November.
