This system will replace the existing barcode system making lost baggage a thing of the past, hopefully.
So as to make air travel less stressful from concerns from lost baggage, Delta has announced the commencement of a new program, in which all of its checked baggage will carry paper RFID tags.
The paper RFID tags will replace the barcoded stickers which were currently used by the airliner for all checked baggage. The idea is that RDIF readers at various points along the journey will track the baggage with the tag’s radio frequency to check whether it is headed to its correct destination.
By the end of August, Delta hopes to have the RFID readers in place in 344 airports. Although this sort of a system has been in the works for years, as per Delta, it is the first to implement it in such a large scale.
As for the RDIF reader’s accuracy, Delta claims that its tag readers have an efficiency of over 95% and it hopes to hit the target of 99.9% once the project gets going and becomes operational.
Given the scale of its operations, this is a significant achievement for Delta, the second largest airliner in the world, who typically services around 180 million customers per year.
If all goes as per plan, potential customers will not have to stand at its carousels wondering about the location of their luggage.
