A bill to this effect is currently underway. Cyber wargames involving Red Teams is set to be the norm.
The infobahn is increasingly being looked at as a platform to wage war by the U.S. military. U.S. lawmakers are now demanding that U.S. military cyber security personnel, undergo mandatory training as enemy hackers, in cyber war games designed to test the country’s cyber defenses.
This suggestion was included in a recent defense bill. So as to avoid confusing a cyber war game with an actual on-going attack, agreements between the parties will have be made and routed through the Defense Secretary.
An official compared the training to the one used by the U.S. Air Force during Red Flag, a routine exercise for fighter pilots.
The Armed Services Committee had voted to create a training program for cyber opposition forces by the end of March 2016. During the deployment of cyber red teams, U.S. Cyber defenses will naturally have to be notified and be agreed upon.
Once operational, the drill will run practice sessions throughout the year.
“The committee recognizes that special arrangements will be needed to deconflict training from real-world activities that may happen on mission networks,” said lawmakers.
According to Michael Gilmore, the Pentagon’s operational test and evaluation director, US cyber forces have already experienced periodic “red team” attacks and have responded with positive results.
