United States Cyber Command launches cyber against ISIS’s digital assets

These strategic attacks have targeted their ability to communicate thus sowing the seeds of confusion and driving down their fighter’s morale.

Although U.S. and particularly Russian air strikes have done much damage to the rank and morale of Daesh fighters, in addition to it, the United States now wants to go after the terrorist group’s online propaganda by chopping off its digital infrastructures through which it has recruited a host of vulnerable people, mostly the youth.

The U.S. Cyber Command has launched its first cyber attack on Daesh’s assets in a bid to disrupt its command and communication centres and other basic functions.

The New York Times, has reported citing sources, that the scope of the cyber attack includes interrupting payments to its fighters to imitating its commanders. It essentially aims to sow seeds of disorder and confusion, this could significantly slowdown the speed with which Daesh fighters communicate coordinate their attacks as well as make it second-guess its every move for fear of walking it an American trap.

The United States so far has reserved the usage of cyberattacks to only rogue nations which pose a physical threat to its interests. This is a strategic shift in the history of U.S warfare.

Although it is still too early to say how effective these attacks have been and whether Daesh will be able to harden its online security to withstand these punishing attacks. But the very fact that the cyber command has gone operational against Daesh’s online presence is noteworthy.
