Tesla expands its European Destination Charging footprint

Just as a great smartphone is pretty useless without apps, Tesla has realized that without electric charging stations its EVs have diminished value.

The key to selling EV is to have a sufficient large support network. Tesla has realized this pretty early in the game.

By the end of 2017, it hopes to double the number of its supercharger network to cover more than 1,200 locations and 7,000 individual chargers spread across the whole of North America, Europe and Asia. This will naturally go a long way of reducing buyer’s anxiety as they peruse its portfolio of EVs.

So as to bring this a step closer to reality, Tesla is hoping to extend the number of its official charging points with its free Destination Charging network in Europe. Although these are available in Asia and in the U.S. for a while now, Destination Chargers are essentially easy to locate access points, which include popular restaurants and hotels, frequently visited by tourists and visitors.

Last week saw Tesla adding 150 more Destination Chargers spread across 14 countries. Casinos, golf clubs, leisure-driven businesses are all set to add Tesla’s proprietary Wall Connector to their facilities so that Tesla’s customers can add miles to their travelling.

Tesla’s vehicle owners should note that the company’s regular Wall Connectors charge at 11KW to 22KW, compared to the 90KW and 135KW for its Superchargers, so they aren’t really designed for a quick pit stop.

Although Tesla’s footprint in the U.S is significantly higher than its presence elsewhere, it is making efforts to add more chargers in Europe, where its footprint is rather small.

So as to provide an incentive to business to house its chargers, Tesla is offering two connectors free of charge or at subsidized costs, as long as these business fall within an easy-to-reach destination.

All that its charging partners, have to do, is cover the cost of electricity, and thus be featured as a charging location inside Tesla route planner.
