Chunshuitang, a Chinese sex toy company is building a smart love hotel.
“The love hotel we are building now will be so smart that the light and temperature of the rooms can change according to the mood and intimacy of a couple,” said Lin Degang, CEO of Chunshuitang, a sex toy company based in Beijing, China.
Set to open at the end of this year in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province of east China, this new ‘smart’ love hotel is called Love Poem.
Decorated in about ten different styles, there will be 50 rooms in total, Lin said.
Some of the rooms would offer role playing activities to couples while others would have skylights and still some other would be decorated with mirrors around the room.
Thermometers that monitor the communications and exchanges between the couples would be installed in all of the rooms which would serve as the “smart” element as claimed by the company. In order to spice up the mood, the light and temperature of the room will be adjusted accordingly.
Handy gadgets including sex toys manufactured by Chunshuitang, wine, chocolate and costumes can be ordered by the guests.
The idea of developing a ‘smart’ love hotel first occurred to Lin in 2009. Researching and designing for his new venture took Lin another six years. the construction for the hotel only began in June of 2015.
Themed hotel in China has a total of $3 billion of business which makes up only 3% of the entire hospitality industry in the country and hence the segment presented a huge potential for Lin. The love hotel market could worth up to $11 billion and it seems to be a lucrative market for China, according to China National Tourism Administration.
Offering both privacy and a venue for relaxation to couples, love hotels – a concept created in Japan, charge by the hour. The themes vary greatly, from Hello Kitty to space ships.
According to The Telegraph, more than 2.5 million people visit the more than 30,000 love hotels in Japan every day. However compared to Japan, while the population in China is ten time that of Japan, there are only 300 to 500 love hotels in China, according to China Radio International.
“Hangzhou is a romantic and beautiful city where the Legend of White Snake originated” and this is the reason that Lin chose Hangzhou to be the location for his first hotel Love Poem. White Snake is an ancient Chinese folktale of a love story between a snake and a man. West Lake, a landmark of Hangzhou, with beautiful scenery and historic relics was the first meeting place of the couple. And Love Poem is located at West Lake.
The high end market is the target clientele for Love Poem. Somewhere between $92 and $232 for a night’s stay would be charged by the hotel from couples. This amount is similar to what Shangri-La in Hangzhou asks for on average.
According to a report collaborated by Mafengwo, an online travel agency, and Biaozhun007, a ranking and rating company in China, in the first half of 2015, there’s a whopping 287% more reservations made to stay in five-star hotels in Hangzhou compared to the same period in 2014.
$3.9 million has been invested by Chunshuitang in Love Poem. the first e-commerce company that specializes in sex toys in China, the company started selling sex toys online in 2002. It has received Series B funding of around $12.4 million a year later and has manufactured 16 types of products in 2014.
