Google employees can now work on their pet project using 20% of their working hours, without having to take on any additional financial debt related to their big idea.
It’s hard to avoid startups created an ex-Google employee in Silicon Valley, who tend to have clever ideas but don’t always see success in the first step. Although this trend is good for innovative thinking, in general, it is telling on Google. The search engine giant has now recognized it and has plans of retaining these curious mind so that their innovations can be used in-house.
The Information has disclosed citing sources who are familiar with the matter at hand that the big G is in the process of creating an incubator which would essentially let its employees pursue their “20% projects” full time. Google allows its employees to work on their own pet projects a fifth of their working hours.
Those who apply will have to submit a business plan, which if accepted, could see them working solely on it for the next several months. For the innovative Google employees out there, this essentially means that they get to keep their job at Google, while at the same time pursue their interest without taking on any substantial financial risks.
Although Google has kept mum on the matter, it isn’t yet clear when this incubation project, dubbed as Area 120, would be open for business.
The creation of Area 120 could work for Google as it tries to foster a startup-culture, however it does not guarantee that its employees will not be poached by its competitors, such as Facebook. Its ATAP team leader has jumped ship to Facebook. There has also been instances of employees, who has gone on to create companies, such as Kevin Systrom who created Instagram, only to be acquired by, you guessed it, Facebook.
Although the creation of Area 120 as a nursery for innovation is a wonderful idea, the question is will it be enough? It’s relatively easy to currently raise funds in Silicon Valley although that does not come with Google’s safety net.
Only time will tell whether this effort of the internet’s pioneering giant, can nurture that big idea behind its scholastic walls.
