Huawei enters the virtual reality market with its Huawei VR

Although VR content is currently limited its however offers the world’s first VR headset with a 360 degree sound.

When Huawei launched its high-end P9 and P9 Plus smartphones in London last week, it purposely withheld a tiny surprise: the fact that it has made an equivalent to Samsung’s Gear VR, which it launched on April 15.

Although everyone was smiling at the launch, the “surprise” launch was more of a “me too” event. Dubbed as the Huawei VR, the device comes in three flavours: two are for its newly launched flagship P9 smartphones while the third is for its larger Mate 8.

You will need to reign in your expectations so that you are not disappointed later since the smartphones support only 1080p resolutions, so expect video quality for the VR content to not be very crisp. Huawei claims that its VR solution offers the world’s first 360 degree sound field with the right content.

The design of the Huawei VR headset almost mirrors that of Samsung. It does not support glasses under its goggles, but its adjustables lenses support myopia of upto -7.00.

In terms of specifications, the Huawei VR provides a low latency of 20ms and a viewing degree of 95. In comparison, Samsung’s Gear VR provides a viewing angle of 96 degrees, while Oculus Rift and HTC Vive Plus provide a 110 degree viewing angle. The Huawei VR provides an anti-blue light filter to protect your eyes.

As for the more exciting part, at launch Huawei VR will offer 4,000 free movies, of which presumably only a fraction is actual VR content, 40 free games, 150 panoramic tours and 350 panoramic images.

Huawei has yet to announce its price and date of availability. It’s clearly early days for Huawei VR.
