They are already working on a wireless charger that could get your electric truck up and moving.
Although charging your car wirelessly has now become more affordable, its still pretty limited since its definitely not the fastest option if you are in a hurry. Secondly if you are looking at this option for anything as large as a truck, wireless charging shouldn’t even be in your radar. Until now.
Researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory are very close finding a solution for all of the above mentioned issues. They have developed a 20KW wireless charging system, having an efficiency of 90%, which if you top up your car when pulling into the garage, could make a lot of sense.
The new designs includes a host of complex electronic circuitry, isolation transformers and custom inversion, which despite all of the added complications is safe since its magnetic field drops off rapidly.
Although the current working prototype is far from a finished product that you could buy in a store, but even at this juncture, if you need to charge your car in a hurry, its very likely that you would love the prototype.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory now plans on creating a 50kW wireless charger that would work as effectively and efficiently as regular quick chargers you would find in the market today.
When that happens, charging your favorite electric truck would become reality. As if this wasn’t enough, researchers are also trying to looking for a solutions that charges the vehicle while it is being run. This could make a lot of sense as electric busses and vehicles could be charged on the move.
