Early backers could have the Oculus Rift by March 28

Early backers could have the Oculus Rift by March 28.

It has been quite a journey for Oculus. Having gone through the rigors of four years of crowdfunding, followed by the release of developer kits, endless hype and as if that was not enough, the acquisition by Facebook, the finish line has finally arrived – customers can soon be with their Oculus Rift headset.

Brendan Iribe, Oculus’s CEO has confirmed that the first batch of the virtual reality wearable is likely to be delivered to customers as early as March 28, just in time for keeping its promise of the March timeframe and the all- important closing of the financial year.

However what is, as yet, unclear is who are the ones who will get the early bragging rights. What is clear is that Kickstarter backers will get the completed Oculus Rift as gratis. They need not shell out the usual $599.

For those who formed part of the first wave, could most probably count themselves lucky since it is very likely that they will receive the first bragging rights.

Unsurprisingly, almost as soon as the pre-orders began, Oculus ran out of their March inventory. If you join their queue now, it will be at least July when you receive your Rift, assuming you have a decent PC rig that can handle it.

Nevertheless, this is definitely history in the making since the Oculus Rift will be the first major, home oriented virtual reality headset for personal computers for the masses. It is set to arrive just a couple of days before the HTC Vive.

Regardless of its commercial success, with the Rift, computing will never be the same again.
