Google’s acquisition of Webpass could boost access to hi-speed internet

Webpass provides wired and wireless internet access with speeds of up to 1Gbps. The ISP already serves customers in 5 U.S. cities.

If you were hoping that Google Fiber comes to your city – the chances of it coming has gone up as it has just made a strategic acquisition through which it aims to deploy high speed internet in cities.

Alphabet’s subsidiary has disclosed that it is set to acquire Webpass, an ISP which currently has “tens of thousands” of customers for its high speed internet Miami, Boston, in the Bay Area, Chicago and San Diego.

Webpass’s internet solution is notable since it capitalizes on it’s used high-speed point-to-point wireless technology as well as fiber optics, to link up businesses with apartment buildings with customers not having to wait for a physical link. It provides its customers with internet access with speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Laying fiber optic cables is not only labour intensive but also faces regulatory hurdles. Its relatively easier to mitigate or sidestep these issues through wireless.

Although exact plans for its deploying and pricing has not been made public, yet, however going by Charles Barr, Webpass’s president, statement that the company “can accelerate the deployment of superfast Internet connections for customers across the U.S.,” with Google Fiber lending a helping hand so as to reach more customers, is certainly very welcoming.
